Croatian Tennis
In the last 25 years tennis is one of the most popular Croatian sports. That should not surprise you. Croatia had several top players in every generation who have won absolutely everything, from the Grand Slam tournaments, Davis Cup and Olympic medals, so we are talking about excellent results. I will remind you on our best tennis players:
Goran Ivanisevic is definitely a world-famous tennis personality especially because of arguing with referees. You could see him often to smash a racket, but if you ignore that, he also played excellent tennis. He won many tournaments both alone, and in couple, but best result was winning the Wimbledon.
Among other important achievements he won two bronze Olympic medals, one alone and one in pair with Goran Prpic. He was also a member of the Croatian tennis team that won the Davis Cup. He still holds record of played aces in a season, with 1,477 aces.
Marin Cilic is already one of the best Croatian tennis players. He won many tournaments but most important result in his career so far was winning the US Open. Marin plays consistently very good tennis, so it is not surprise to se him among the top 20 players of the world. He has great chance to
win the second Davis Cup in history for Croatia.
Ivan Ljubicic is a tennis player who has marked the Croatian tennis with a great tennis. He won several tournaments. It is hard to forget impressive winning of the Davis Cup with Croatian tennis team in which were Mario Ancic, Ivo Karlovic and Goran Ivanisevic. One of most important results in his career is Olympic bronze in pairs.
Mario Ancic was an excellent tennis player despite the fact that his career ended early. He won a few tournaments but most impressive results were victory in the Davis Cup and Olympic bronze medal in pairs where he played with Ivan Ljubicic. These matches were simply unforgettable.
Ivo Karlovic has a very good career, with rank within 20-50 best tennis players in the world. Ivo was part of the Croatian tennis team that won the Davis Cup. He won several tournaments, and holds few ace records in tennis.
Ivan Dodig is for sure our best tennis player in doubles where he has very good results. In his career has won several tournaments, and because of that he is very important for Croatia in Davis Cup.
We should not forget Iva Majoli and her conquest of Roland Garros. Karolina Sprem and Mirjana Lucic Baroni have won tournaments also.
But we do not live on old glory, because of new young generation of impressive tennis players. With Borna Coric, Ana Konjuh, Donna Vekic and Petra Martic we can expect many great results in future. These days we are waiting for the conquest of another Davis Cup.
